We had a great pajama day today. We took a photo of each child and then the children drew their own portrait based on the printed picture. We focused on the lines and shapes our bodies made, looking closely at the bends and directions of our legs and arms. This artwork is now the cover of our student portfolios.

As you know, we celebrated the conclusion (hopefully) of winter with a carnival on March 26. We visited activity stations outside, run by wonderful parent volunteers. Special thanks to Jackie (Zack's mom) and Michelle (Ethan's mom) for running our relay station. Here are some photos from the day. Last Friday we participated in the school snowman building contest. Our morning class was so excited for this, the kids were chanting, "Pizza! Pizza!" as we walked outside (the winners were given a class pizza party). Sadly, when our morning class reached the snow we quickly realized it wasn't sticky enough to create any snowmen. So our morning class played in the snow, creating snow angels and painting the snow with some spray colouring that Kira brought. Photos to come soon (they are on a parent's camera) Our afternoon class was able to build snowmen and had a blast. We were just starting to build a snowfort when it was time to go home. Here are some photos from our outside time. The afternoon class came up with some research questions relating to pirates: Why do pirates need maps? and What do pirate maps look like? During community circle the children shared what they know about pirates:
Ms. D.: "What do they look like?" Student ideas: Eyepatch, pegleg, hook, solid golden teeth, they never brush their teeth, they have swords, they have a belt they put their sword in. We read this book wondering if it would answer our questions about pirates. After reading the book (which was quite funny) we concluded that pirates need maps to find things. The book had lots of different maps to… · find lots of treasure · find the bathroom · find the fridge or the mall · find pirate school After discussing this book, we wondered if there is such thing as pirate school. Do pirates go to school? We also looked at this pirate map and pulled out words from the images. This process is called PWIM (Picture Word Induction Model) and is used to build vocabulary. Princesses

Finally, the mommy t-rex gets home with food and she drops it and the babies run to the food to eat. The end. To begin Groundhog Day was read the story "Wake Up, Groundhog". We talked about what we know about shadows, here are the children's ideas:
Our discussion lead to the conclusion that everything has a shadow, but the children wondered if earth has a shadow. Some thought yes, others thought no, and some wondered if we could even know because the shadow would be in outer space. We then created a class graph to depict our predictions on whether Balzac Billy would see his shadow. After counting the predictions, we watched a video online showing that Billy did not see his shadow... could we really have an early spring? Black Cat vs White Cat By Hailey The black cat was in the dark and the white cat was in the light. The black cat goes to his mother, the evil witch. They had to run away to the princess' castle. The end. I have started using Twitter as a quick way to share our learning with parents and other educators. I find the blog is great for sharing the big/long term things we do, but find it is not good for sharing the day-to-day learning and exploring of the children. So, I am venturing into the world of Twitter to share these moments.
To protect your privacy, I will not share photos of the children's faces on Twitter. I will include photos of their work or photos from the back showing what they are engaged in. Feel free to follow me to see our learning (link on the top right corner of the blog). If you have questions, please still contact me through email as I am not a Twitter expert and will likely not respond that way! |
